Just Something

[Author’s Note: This piece is far from finished. It needs A LOT of work. But I usually just scribble and then build from there, so this is was I initially wrote.]

The rain knocked gently against the window of your car, as if trying to break our concentration. We’d been parked in front of my house for what felt like hours now, talking about everything and nothing. The inside was fogged up from hot breath and rushed words, laughs and deafening silences. In the middle of my speech on politics, your hand slid slyly to mine. Grasping it lightly as you held your breath. We glanced at each other, then, but didn’t dare linger too long. The rain came harder now, slamming against the car in the quietness that surrounded us.

You said something, but the murmur was distorted by the weather. I looked at you, our eyes meeting, and you smiled. I could feel my face warming, blushing, and I started moving my hand away from you. You leaned forward and wrapped your other hand around the back of my neck, pulling me into you. Your warmth was radiating from you when our lips met. I had always detested first kisses because there was so much expectation and it never lived up to that. We lingered there, our mouths pressed together. I moved away slightly, looking at you and wondering what you were thinking. I wanted to ask but you pulled me closer again, this time allowing your tongue to slide between my lips as you kissed me. The rain stopped then, almost in a gasp, and the sun bathed the car. I didn’t dare pull away this time, and one kiss turned into many as the rain began to fall again.

We weren’t holding hands anymore, but allowed them to run all over each other. Our bodies strained to touch, hips pushed hard against the arm rest. You sat back suddenly, your eyes closed tightly as you tried to catch your breath. I readjusted in my seat and watched you gain your composure. When our eyes met again, you smiled. I was shaking, nervous with what was to come.

I invited you in without even thinking, and you nodded. As soon as our shoes hit the carpet of my living room, we were tangled in each other. The feeling of you against me gave me shivers as we guided ourselves towards the couch. A quick worry flew through my mind: My roommate. But she wasn’t home, and when I toppled backwards on the cushions, I moaned as I felt the weight of you on me.

You held my face as you kissed me, your warm palm caressing my face. I wanted to feel you, skin to skin, but my own fears prevented me from acting on it. You sat up slightly and pulled off your shirt in one quick movement. You waited for my nod, and then slid your hands under my own shirt, pulling it off. When our bodies touched, we both took in a sharp breath, and kissed each other with new found passion.

“Maybe its the simple things,” she slurred, her mouth slightly agape. I could see how unfocused her eyes were, how uncertain and shaky her thoughts became. She was gone. Almost a body without a soul. Her hand clenched mine as her eyes rolled around in her head like marbles.

“Maybe the simple things what, ma?” I muttered, pulling the sheet up and tucking it under her chin.

“Maybe the simple things will make life worth living after I am gone,” her eyes focused on me for a split second before resuming their journey.

For once since the beginning of her hospital stay she made sense. And then everything stopped. Her eyes rolled back, her mouth sagged, and a high pitched tone filled the room.

She was gone after one spec of sanity, one moment of clarity. A nurse came in and checked her pulse then motioned for a doctor.

I squeezed my mother’s hand and smiled. Now she wont have to suffer.
