Techno Geek: Samsung HD 3D TV
(Writer’s Note: Ok, I wrote this sometime ago for a magazine I was gonna be a part of. I figure, might as well share it. I don’t know how good it is, but I did my research. Hope you guys in enjoy. Remember, this is slightly dated and no one else had released a 3D TV yet.)
When everyone thinks what’s cool and brand spanking new this year in electronics, only one thing comes to mind.
The shiny, awesome, sexy Samsung 3D TV.
Although most people may not know it, Samsung is one of the best flatscreen HD TVs out there right now. So knowing that the name Samsung is attached to it gives us a little flutter. And besides, what crazy person doesn’t want to watch their favourite DVDs and TV shows in 3D, right? Ah yes, imagine relaxing at home and enjoying 3D entertainment whenever you want.
As amazing as the idea sounds at first shout (and it does sound amazing) maybe we need to take a deeper look at this lovely piece of technology.
Luckily, this shiny new toy is a flat screen. Instant cool points. Because who in their right minds wants a huge bulky TV sitting in their house now that the flat screen has come out? So thumbs up. The TV comes in a few sizes. HUGE! Oh, sorry. I mean, sizes ranging from 63 to 40 inches (remember that this is the diagonal measurements of the screen itself). And is a staggering one inch thick without the stand. So far so good. It’s also comes in three options. Plasma, LCD, or LED and they are all HDTVs.
Oh, Samsung. Must you always make my dreams come true?
It looks like they were offering a promotion, with the purchase of your television, you get a Starter Kit. Of course it was for limited time only. The Starter Kit included: Monsters vs Aliens Blu-ray 3D Disc and two pairs of Samsung 3D Active Glasses.
The Samsung 3D glasses are battery operated. Which is a plus.
As amazing as the idea sounds right now, there is no point in saving the money to buy this TV unless you just want to look better than your friends. Although having the option to watch something in 3D seems appealing, no channels are participating right now. And it seems only Dreamworks is participating with Samsung to bring 3D entertainment into your home. Samsung does say, however, that sports channels will be coming out with 3D events soon. It also says that Samsung has a built-in 3D processor which will change normal movies and photos (because you can connect USBs and your computer) into 3D instantly.
Most likely, this will require the purchase of the Samsung Blu-ray player and, obviously, your favorite movies on Blu-ray (if they’re available on Blu-ray yet).
I love the idea, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like Samsung is rushing it. I mean, most channels aren’t even in HD yet! I can only imagine how long it will take them to catch up with the 3D wave. Perhaps it’s just way ahead of it’s time, which could very well be a possibility. But with most channels STILL not being in HD, I just don’t think the Samsung 3D TV is worth the thousand or two thousand dollar price tag.
Samsung is amazing. They continue to push the boundaries again and again. They should be proud of themselves. But I don’t think television is ready yet. So, I would wait a few years before investing in a 3D TV.
I probably wont ever end up purchasing one of the 3D TVs. Not because it’s not a good idea, because it is, but because I have no interest in watching television in 3D. I’ll stick to HD and leave the 3D to the movie theaters.
